Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is derived from two Japanese words "rei", which means "universal or spiritual" and "ki", which means "vital life force energy".
Dr. Mikao Usui was born in Taniai, Japan on August 15th, 1865. During his life he studied medicine, psychology, religion, and spiritual development. He practiced a form of moving meditation called Kiko, which consisted of meditation, movement, and breathing exercises.
Dr. Usui was aware that Buddha and Christ possessed the power of healing. He became a Buddhist in 1922 at the age of 49, and spent much time in a Buddhist Monastery where he discovered that there is a universal life energy all around us. This energy is made up of ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly to the body's nervous system, and can be accessed to heal it. Within a time span of 4 short years, he taught more than 2,000 students and trained 16 teachers. In 1923, he opened his first clinic, and in 1925 he opened an even larger clinic.
He then began touring and lecturing to promote Usui Reiki. He wanted to make his technique available people worldwide.
Today Reiki is recognized worldwide as a means of healing.
