What are Affirmations?
Affirmations are positive words or pictures that are used to depict a specific outcome. Whereas visualization is visualizing a specific outcome and seeing it in your mind's eye, affirmations are a means of programming or re-programming the mind to think in a different way.
Affirmations must ALWAYS be formulated in the positive. When hearing the following sentence "I am not going to get sick". Our brains process the information, by zoning in on the topic, in this case the word "sick" of the sentence then omitting the word "not" from the sentence, so it therefore thinks the sentence is now positive. Little does it know it now has turned it into an undesired outcome... "I am going to get sick".
Another mistake people make when trying to loose weight is by repeating "I am not fat" which becomes "I am fat". The best way to combat this is to re-word your affirmation to one of the following... "I am happily living at my ideal weight" OR "Every day in every way I am getting slimmer and fitter" OR "Every day in every way I am becoming fitter and healthier".
Affirmations work by training the mind. To train your mind you must constantly remind yourself of the affirmation. One of the ways you can do this by writing it/them on post-it notes and sticking the notes in places where you'll see them often and can repeat them, either out loud, or in your mind... places like your bathroom mirror, the fridge, your car dashboard, or anywhere where they will be noticed throughout the day. You might feel frustrated in the beginning, your mind might try and resist the change, it might start telling you that affirmations won't work, etc. In order for them to be given a fair chance you should try and stick to using them for 28-30 days and see the results. If you find you've gone a day and forgotten to affirm, don't beat yourself up over the fact, just start again tomorrow.
